Volunteer work with dogs

20 January 2010 One Comment

In Singapore we were fortunate enough to be able to occasionally help out at a shelter we regularly visited (Mutts n Mittens). Since we came to the US, one of the things we said we wanted to do was make a more regular contribution either financially or with photography to dog organisations… Things have gone well, although it hasn’t worked out exactly as I would have liked (there is never enough time). However, in the past year, I’ve managed to do a number of shoots to help get some dogs rehomed. The way it works is pretty simple – I volunteer for a couple of local organisations so that when they need shots for a new dog that needs rehoming, we hook up. I only managed to do 3 or 4 shoots last year – I want to do one or two every month in 2010. When it happens, it works out great. We get to meet some wonderful dogs (and the incredible people who volunteer), the shelter gets the shots which make a difference in being able to rehome them, and also my company contributes some $’s for my time. A win – win all around.

Here was a quick shoot I did for a Pitbull named Maggie. She is being helped by Animals First Foundation after she was found running down the I-5 highway with her pup. Fortunately they were picked up by a volunteer and are now looking for a home. Maggie was a wonderful girl – it’s possible she’s been fought so needs a home without dogs. We’re hoping she can find one. Anyway, here are a few shots from the day. I’ll create a category for this kind of posting as it’s fun for me to share with everyone here. If you are (or know someone who might be) interested in helping Maggie, you can contact Animal’s First at their website.
